10 students participated in the Vision Start program.

6 students were Caucasian males.
4 students were Caucasian females.

5 students qualified for free or reduced lunch.

2 male students qualified for special education services.

90% of the students showed an increase on the Star Reading assessment after nine weeks in the program.

There was an average grade equivalent increase of 1 year for the 10 students after 9 weeks in the program.

5 males in the program showed an average increase of 1.24 years after 9 weeks.

1 male showed no increase.

4 females in the program showed an average increase of 5 months after 9 weeks in the program.

2 male special education students showed an average increase of 1.5 years after 9 weeks.

4 students who qualified for free or reduced lunch showed an average increase of 8.75 months after 9 weeks.

1 student who qualified for free or reduced lunch showed no gain.

60% of the students surveyed felt that they were reading faster.
57% responded that the words no longer continued to “move” on the page.
64% stated that they did not have to re-read the same line as often.
67% find it easier to pay attention in class.

I fully expect that these changes in the vision of the students and consequently, their perceptions of reading will ultimately bring about significant improvements in both the emotional and academic areas.
